Disability Studies (DISA)
DISA 2500. Introduction to Disability Studies. (4 Credits)
This course introduces students to the multidisciplinary field of disability studies through an exploration of the ways that disability is understood and created in various social and cultural worlds. Students interrogate the meanings of disability in a variety of contexts within the U.S. and beyond with a particular focus on the ways that disability intersects with other categories of lived experience such as race, gender, sexuality, age, and socioeconomic class. This course also covers the basics of accessibility and the process of creating events and spaces that are inclusive to people with a wide range of access needs. Four-credit courses that meet for 150 minutes per week require three additional hours of class preparation per week on the part of the student in lieu of an additional hour of formal instruction.
